Books are one of the best ways to understand the world and the people around you. You can step into the shoes of others, travel to other times and let your imagination run wild. We have compiled a list of 6 books everyone must read before turning 30.

1.       To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

a.      This is a timeless classic. Although published in the 1960’s, it is more relevant than ever with all the movement surrounding eradicating racial discrimination. The story is set in the Alabama during the era of the Great Depression. It explores the topics of prejudice, hypocrisy, childhood innocence and justice in an enthralling way. Don’t forget to bookmark your favorite passages.
2.      1984 by George Orwell

a.      George Orwell paints a dystopian world where the Big Brother is in control of everything. The world as we know it has ended and the world’s population is ruled by fears and lies. With such an hopeless situation in the background, Orwell explores the themes of importance of free will, individuality and the freedom of choosing whom to love. If you have trouble understanding any of the words, you can try an electronic bookmark dictionary.
3.      The Diary Of A Young Girl by Anne Frank

a.      This is the story of one of the most horrific event in the human history from the eyes of an young girl. As the Nazis are hunting down jews in Germany, Anne writes in her diary about what she experiences as one of those jews hiding from the Nazis. It is heartbreaking yet hopeful at the same time as Anne still believes in the inherent good and beauty of the world.
4.      Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

a.      A book anyone who calls themselves a feminist should read. The story revolves around four sister coming of age in the New England of the 19th Century. All of them gifted with talents and strong personalities, the book follows as they step into adult and realize their dreams. I love to bookmark my favorite passages from this and reread them.
5.      Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

a.      This is another dystopian novel that explores a world where books are banned. Everything from fiction to novels to biographies to even dictionary is banned. Books are not cherished but are burned to ashes. And the main character is saddled with this task. The book holds a mirror to the unhealthy obsession of the Western world with consuming mindless media and an affinity to conform.
6.      The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

a.      Set in the Great Depression era, an Oklahoma family are forced to move to California to survive. It is an All-American story of a time in the history of the world when the American spirit shined the most. It shows the great divide the Depression caused between the rich and poor. It really is an amazing read.
